Interests |
| A
longstanding research interest has been to study the impact of maternal
diabetes on the structure and function of the human placenta. Since
we believe that the impact of diabetes will be greater early in gestation
than at term, we have been focusing on the first trimester of gestation.
Emphasis was put on the effects of hyperglycaemia as a hallmark of
diabetes. Additional efforts are being made to unravel effects of
insulin on the placenta, which have still remained a mystery. However,
because of the relative stability towards hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinaemia
of the placenta and the trophoblast (the cell-type that is primarily
exposed to maternal endocrine and metabolic derangements), we are
now shifting our interest to the effect of lipids and fatty acids.
Current
Projects:
- In
vitro
effects of hyperglycaemia and hyperglycaemia-associated hyperosmolarity
on trophoblast proliferation and apoptosis.
- Activation
of stress-response pathways by hyperglycaemia and hyperosmolarity
in vitro in placental and foetal cells.
- Identification
of insulin-dependent processes in the human placenta.
- In
vitro effects of fatty acids on trophoblast proliferation,
apoptosis and differentiation.
- In
vivo effects of fatty acids on structure and function of the
human and rat placenta.
